what is baptism?
Baptism is a public proclamation of faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. God created each of us to know and glorify Him, but our spiritual DNA, hijacked by sin, drives us away from His holy nature. We desire everything contrary to God’s holiness, and Scripture teaches that the penalty or “wages” of this sin is death – eternal separation from God (see Romans 6.23). Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, lived among us, died on the cross, and was raised from the dead to pay the penalty of sin for all who believe in Him. When we place faith in Jesus Christ, we receive God’s gift of forgiveness and new life in Christ. God restores our spiritual DNA, freeing us to know and glorify Him. Baptism is a public testimony that richly symbolizes these spiritual truths. Our descent into the water visualizes our death to the control of sin, and our emergence from the water proclaims our new life in Christ.
Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. For if we have been united with Him in a death like His, we will certainly also be united with Him in a resurrection like His.-Romans 6:3-5
Who should be baptized?
Since baptism is a public profession of the Christian’s personal faith in Jesus Christ’s sacrificial act on our behalf, only those who have professed faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior should be baptized.
All of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. Galatians 3:26-27
why should i be baptized?
Christian water baptism is an ordinance instituted by Jesus Christ and it is important in the plan of God. We must remember two points about the importance of water baptism. 1. Whatever Christ definitely established and ordained cannot be unimportant, whether we understand its significance or not. 2. Christ and the apostles showed the importance of this ordinance by observing it. Jesus walked many miles to be baptized, though He was without sin.
…and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 3:21
when should i be baptized?
Since baptism is a public profession of faith in Jesus Christ, it should be performed after one understands the Gospel, experiences God’s grace, and responds to it through faith in Jesus Christ. Baptism performed prior to these three things is representative if something other than new life in Christ and falls short of what Jesus calls us to do.
…then immediately he and his family were baptized… he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God. Acts 16:33-34
